About this trip
Umbwe is the steepest and most direct route up Kilimanjaro, climbing quickly through dense forest before joining the southern circuit near the summit. Its speed and gradient make it the most physically demanding of the standard routes and generally the least forgiving on acclimatization, so it is usually recommended for fit, experienced trekkers rather than a first high-altitude climb. In exchange, its lower stretches are remote and quiet compared to the more heavily used routes.
