About this trip
Mount Meru, at 4,562 meters, sits inside Arusha National Park and is climbed far less often than Kilimanjaro despite being a serious trek in its own right, its summit ridge with a sheer drop into the ash cone crater is one of the more dramatic views on any East African trek. The approach passes through montane forest and moorland home to giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys, and past the Momella Lakes, often visited by flamingos, before the final push to the summit. Because its trailhead altitude is lower and the standard itinerary shorter, three to four days, than Kilimanjaro, Meru is frequently climbed as an acclimatization trek in the days before a Kilimanjaro attempt, as well as being a worthwhile climb on its own.
