About this trip
Machame approaches from the south and is Kilimanjaro's most popular route, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" (the gentler Marangu route across the mountain is correspondingly nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route"). It is steeper and more physically demanding than Marangu, walked over roughly six to seven days, with varied scenery through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert, and camping the whole way rather than huts. Its popularity means busier camps in peak season, but the scenery and acclimatization profile keep it the most-climbed route on the mountain.
