About this trip
The Ngorongoro Crater is an unbroken volcanic caldera around 20 kilometers across and 600 meters deep, and its floor holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa within a comparatively small, walled-in area, lion, elephant, hippo, and one of the last reliable places in Tanzania to see black rhino among them. The crater sits inside the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which is also home to Maasai communities who still graze cattle across the surrounding highlands, so the drive down to the crater floor and back up again usually includes time on the rim as well. Most visits are a single long day, descending early to make the most of the morning light before the crater's afternoon vehicle traffic builds up.
