About this trip
The Usambara Mountains, part of the ancient Eastern Arc range near Lushoto in northeastern Tanzania, offer a different kind of trekking to Kilimanjaro or Meru: rolling forested ridgelines, terraced farmland and village trails at a noticeably cooler climate than the plains below, with no summit or altitude pressure involved. Walks here pass through small mountain communities, patches of montane rainforest with high levels of plant and bird endemism, and viewpoints and waterfalls reached on foot rather than by vehicle. It suits travelers who want a genuine walking trip and some cultural contact with local villages, either as a relaxed few days on its own or as a lower-key add-on to a bigger Tanzania itinerary.
