About this trip
Marangu sits on Kilimanjaro's southern foothills and is best known as the gateway village for the Marangu climbing route, but it is also a worthwhile day trip on its own for travelers not climbing the mountain. A typical day includes a walk to one of the area's waterfalls, a stop at a local coffee and banana farm, and a look at Chagga culture and history, the Chagga are the ethnic group native to Kilimanjaro's slopes, with some routes passing old underground tunnels once used for refuge during tribal conflicts. It is an easy, scenic way to spend a day near Kilimanjaro without committing to a multi-day climb.
